What Are Civil Rights, And Who Protects Them?

People in the United States enjoy the same, equal rights as everyone else under the Constitution and our system of laws. Sadly, though, for some people, these basic rights can be trodden on and violated in acts of discrimination, violence, or other miscarriages of justice. You are entitled to many rights, including:

  • The right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
  • The right to due process in the criminal justice system.
  • Freedom of speech, religion, and assembly.
  • Freedom from discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, or disability status.

Civil rights are essential components of democracy. Despite this, certain groups can violate your rights through detrimental actions. If you’ve suffered a violation of your basic rights—you are not alone. A Richmond civil rights lawyer with the Halperin Law Center can fight for you, no matter your economic status.

What We Do

ATTORNEYS WHO FIGHT FOR YOU

Certain violations of our civil rights can lead to highly detrimental outcomes. For example, any injury that you suffer as the result of a violation of your civil rights could lead to disability, costly medical bills or lost wages—not to mention emotional trauma. If you or a loved one has been harmed, our civil rights attorneys want to help you secure the fair compensation you deserve.

  • Compassionate, Knowledgeable Attorneys – We believe that all people should be able to exercise and enjoy their basic rights. That’s why our attorneys will work on your behalf when the actions of another person or third party interfere with this free exercise of your rights or causes you physical injury, or deprivation of your liberty.
  • Battle-Tested Trial Lawyers – Whether in negotiations with an insurance company or other party in the courtroom, the team at the Halperin Law Center isn’t willing to accept anything less than the maximum possible compensation—and we’re unafraid of pursuing litigation to do so.
  • Speak To An Attorney For Free – When something of the complexity and magnitude of a civil rights violation takes place, you’re likely to have questions. Our attorneys can walk you through the civil claims process from day one, keeping you updated on developments as they unfold.

How We Help

PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS

Civil rights lawyers are attorneys who use their knowledge and training to help get compensation for people whose civil rights have been violated. Some examples of civil rights violations that a Halperin Law Center attorney can help you with include:

  • Police Brutality
  • Excessive Force
  • Malicious Prosecution
  • Violation of Freedom of Speech and Religion
  • Hate Crimes
  • Unlawful Search & Seizure
  • Inhumane Conditions of Confinement
  • Discrimination on the Basis of Race and/or Sex

Just because the United States is looked upon around the world as a leader in democracy doesn’t mean citizens or residents don’t suffer abuses of their civil rights. Unfortunately, this happens all too often.

If you’ve been impacted by any of the above or similar examples of a civil rights violation in Virginia, you want to know that you can be fairly compensated for your damages and justice can be done. The experienced civil rights attorneys with the Halperin Law Center can help you pursue all available avenues for compensatory and punitive damages.

Frequently Asked Questions

If a third party violated your civil rights, we can help you fight back. We’ve helped our clients recover millions of dollars in compensation, and we’re proud to be able to handle your case from the beginning through completion.

How Much Does A Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

It’s common for clients to be concerned about the cost of hiring an attorney to help them deal with the aftermath of a violation of their civil right. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the attorneys at the Halperin Law Center work on a contingency fee basis. This means that you won’t pay anything upfront. In fact, we only get paid if you win, as our fees come from a portion of any future settlement.

How Long Do I Have To File A Lawsuit?

The amount of time you have to make a claim from the date of the accident/injury depends on where the accident happened and the type of claim you are making. In Virginia, it is generally 2 years from the date of the injury, however there are some governmental claims that must be brought within a year. In the District in Columbia, it’s usually 3 years from the date of injury. In Maryland, it’s typically the same. However, there are exceptions, and you should contact a trial lawyer who specializes in personal injury or wrongful death cases in order to determine how long you have to file a claim.
